Peace Ambassadors to Rebuild Trust and Restore Hope

In Mozambique, a few women and youth had to abandon their villages and community because of violent extremist groups. Maria is one such person who left her community, as she had to bear the consequences of her sons joining violent extremist groups.

“My children came [back], and I fled because the military and local government were looking for us,” says Maria describing her situation. She confessed to living in dire conditions without a roof, often in forests and cemeteries and living off wild fruits and cassava from the fields. She was scared to return home as she feared her safety, community’s judgement and backlash.

A group of Peace Ambassadors, trained by one of GCERF’s civil society partners, sought Maria out. Comprised mostly of women, these ambassadors had been equipped with the skills to engage local authorities, mediate conflicts, and support families like Maria’s—those exiled by violence, fear, and loss. They listened to her story, reassured her, and told her that she was safe to come home. They informed her that those linked to violence had been granted amnesty, and her people were ready to welcome her back. They convinced her to return home.

These peace groups work hard to rebuild trust and bridge divides. It is thanks to them that Maria found the courage to return. The Peace Ambassadors are more than mediators, they are the heart of community restoration. On this International Women’s Day, Maria’s journey home stands as a testament to the role women play in fostering reconciliation, healing wounds, and forging a path towards lasting peace.
