Mothers of Nairobi

The Nairobi neighborhood of Majengo is considered a hotspot for radicalisation efforts by violent extremist groups. Maimouna’s father and uncle left for Somalia and have not been heard from for several years. Like many other women, stigma in the community and scrutiny by Kenyan authorities has made life difficult for her family. Mothers of Nairobi, a YADEN East Africa’s inSOLIDARITY project supported by a grant from GCERF to the organisation Act Change Transform (ACT!), trains young women to be champions against violent extremism through mentorships.
